About the Score
The score is written to carry the emotional and dramatic world of Dickens’ story through music. It follows Pip from the humble beginnings of the forge on the marshes to the very different “sphere of life” he encounters in London, reflecting the changing circumstances and emotional pressures of his journey.
Recurring motifs and musical reprises connect characters, relationships and moments across the piece. The score moves between solos and duets, character-driven numbers, status songs and larger ensemble pieces, allowing the musical to move between private character moments and the wider world Pip is determined to enter.
